E-Bike Rentals in Chatham-Kent

On July 25, 2022, the following motion was approved.

"That:

  1. Chatham-Kent Tourism staff connect local businesses, that have stated they are interested in discussing the opportunity of hosting an in-person e-bike rental program partnership, with Demon Electric/RYDE.
  2. Chatham-Kent Tourism staff engage in discussions with Demon Electric/RYDE regarding the installation of up to six RYDE e-bike charging stations throughout the municipality, with a tentative launch date of Spring 2023 and a maximum project cost not exceeding $45,000, funded by the Tourism Reserve and/or grant support."

Background

As directed by Council, a public Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) was issued in February, 2022 in order to determine if there was a business or organization;

  • Interested in facilitating a Bike Use/Rental Pilot Project in Chatham-Kent
  • Willing to operate a Pilot Project as a self-managed and self-funded operation
  • With the experience and capacity to create and implement a Pilot Project.

Key Aspects of the REOI:

The REOI stated that the primary goal of the Pilot Project was to support tourism development, while also recognizing clear recreation benefits for local residents.

  • Attract cycling tourists to CK
  • Provide safe, recreational access to bikes and/or services for visitors and residents
  • Diversify tourism product offerings
  • Increase visitor time spent in CK
  • Increase economic impact of visitor spend

  • Support/enhance cycling culture in CK
  • Increase collaboration & partnership opportunities
  • Increase bike repair and/or sales Support for bike infrastructure development


The REOI also outlined expected roles and responsibilities for both the interested operator and the Municipality.
