Let's Talk Water Culture

Update on status: Since the CK Plan 2035 and Community Development Advisory Committees of Council hosted the first virtual public meeting on Water Culture (April 28, 2021), responding to the Wheatley gas leak emergencies and other issues such as Council’s Woodlot Preservation Motion have been competing priorities for Council and for the Municipal team. Several of the personnel responsible for this work continue to be redeployed to work on our response to the Wheatley situation. This delay is expected to continue until the challenges in Wheatley are resolved.

Several of the personnel responsible for this work continue to be redeployed to work on our response to the Wheatley situation. This delay is expected to continue until the challenges in Wheatley are resolved.

Specifically, Water Culture is a significant part of Wheatley’s story and community and we do not feel the time is right to proceed with meetings on the topic when residents in Wheatley may not be able to attend due to being focused on other things.

More information will be posted here when resources are available and we can once again turn our attention to address this important topic.

In November of 2020, CK Council passed the following motion: Chatham-Kent’s geography includes significant bodies of water, and waterways. Among the features that contribute to the attractiveness and livability of the municipality are its lakes, rivers and open spaces. There exists a unique “water culture” in Chatham-Kent, with various communities working towards establishing goals for their waterfront or water access ways, or celebrating their proximity to water in various ways. There exists a need to discuss the infrastructure, community, recreation, tourism, and environmental components of CK waterways. Chatham-Kent establish a working group focused on water in Chatham-Kent. This working group will be co-chaired by the current chairs of the CK2035 committee and the Community Development Advisory committee. This working group will provide opportunity for community stakeholders, staff members, and council to participate in community-based discussions about our approach to our waterways in CK.

On April 28, 2021, the CK Plan 2035 and Community Development Advisory Committees of Council hosted a joint public meeting on this topic of “Water Culture in CK”. The presentation from that meeting is attached to this page as information. Based on preliminary discussions related to this topic, and feedback received at that meeting, it was decided that “break-out” working groups be created to gather more feedback on specific elements related to the broad topic of Water Culture. We ask that interested parties complete the attached survey.
