What do you think about Short-Term Dwelling Rentals in Chatham-Kent?

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is reviewing the usage of short-term dwelling rentals across the municipality. Although there are many ways to define what a short-term rental is, it typically can be defined as being when all or part of a dwelling is rented out on short term basis in exchange for payment. Short-term dwelling rentals are often marketed for rent through online platforms, cottage rental agencies and buy and sell forums. Hosts may rent entire dwellings, apartments, secondary dwellings, seasonal dwellings or bedrooms in a home on a short-term basis. For the purposes of this review, a short-term rental does not include commercial accommodations such as hotel or motel units.

At the June 6, 2022 Council meeting, Council directed administration to conduct a survey to obtain feedback and comments on short-term dwelling rentals in Chatham-Kent. The Municipality is looking to gain an understanding of both short-term dwelling rental issues as well as opportunities across the municipality. All feedback received will be summarized and the results will be provided to Council in September of 2022 for deliberation on how to move forward with addressing this type of accommodation.
