Tilbury Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is inviting public comment on a proposal to create a Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area ("DOLRA") in the community of Tilbury.

What is a Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area?

A "DOLRA" is a fenced area where residents have the opportunity to exercise dogs off-leash within a controlled environment without being in contravention of municipal by-laws.

Who is proposing the DOLRA in Tilbury?

A local committee of volunteers have submitted an application to designate a DOLRA in Tilbury. Per terms of Chatham-Kent's DOLRA Policy, a local committee is required to fund the capital costs of the DOLRA as well as be responsible for its ongoing upkeep and operation. The Municipality provides support through the designation of land, garbage pickup, and some general maintenance.

Where will it be?

The Tilbury DOLRA is proposed to be located in Kirkham Park on the site of the former ball diamond (42.26700802924, -82.435433841). A map of the potential layout is below.

Does Chatham-Kent already have a dog park?

Chatham-Kent has two designated DOLRAs: Happy Tails Off-Leash Dog Park in Wallaceburg and John Waddell Dog Park in Chatham. Both parks are run by local volunteer committees with support from the Municipality. A third park, located in Dresden, has been approved but construction has not yet commenced.

Public comment is open until 4:30pm on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Comments will be included in a future report to Municipal Council considering the DOLRA designation.
