Bryon Fluker Memorial Trail

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent invites residents to attend the official unveiling of the Bryon Fluker Memorial Trail in Tilbury.

The unveiling ceremony will take place on Tuesday, July 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, Tilbury.

The trail was named in honour of the late Bryon Fluker, recognizing his more than four decades of dedicated service to the community. First elected to Tilbury Town Council in 1972, Mr. Fluker served as a Councillor, Mayor of Tilbury, and later as a member of Chatham-Kent Council, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and residents alike for his commitment to public service. Council approved the commemorative naming following a recommendation made in 2022 and subsequent public consultation.

"Bryon cared deeply about his community and dedicated much of his life to making Tilbury and Chatham-Kent a better place," said Mayor Darrin Canniff. "This trail serves as a lasting tribute to his leadership, service, and the positive impact he had on so many people."

Community members are welcome to attend the ceremony as Chatham-Kent formally commemorates Mr. Fluker's legacy.


At the August 8, 2022, Council Meeting, Chatham-Kent Council passed the following motion:

“Whereas there is currently no formal process to recognize elected municipal officials for service to the community through naming or commemoration, and whereas former Councillor Bryon Fluker, who was elected to Tilbury town council in 1972, and served until the year 2000, when he was subsequently elected as Mayor of Tilbury until 2006, followed by Chatham-Kent council where he subsequently served until 2014.

And whereas the community of Tilbury benefitted from the 40+ years of service and leadership partaken by Mr. Fluker.

Therefore, I move that Chatham-Kent staff review and recommend an appropriate walking trail in the Tilbury area be named after Mr. Bryon Fluker following the requirements of the Chatham-Kent Commemorative Naming Policy.”

Councillor Fluker was first elected in 1972 and served as the Mayor of Tilbury until being elected to the inaugural Council of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent as a Councillor for Ward 1 in 1998 where he served until 2018.

After consultation with staff from the Parks and Recreation Division and the widow of the late Councillor Fluker, the trail within Memorial Park in Tilbury was chosen. Councillor Fluker would often take this trail when he was out on his daily walks.

As per the requirements of the Commemorative Naming Policy, the naming of the Bryon Fluker Memorial Trail will be open for public comments for a period of 30 days. Please complete the survey below.
