Some neighbourhoods in Chatham-Kent are at more risk from climate change for a variety of reasons including higher risk of flooding, fewer trees causing hotter temperatures, and fewer resources to cope with the impacts of climate change such as floods or heatwaves. This affects our health, homes, and environment.
SNAP (Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program) supports existing neighbourhoods by bringing residents and the Municipality together to make neighbourhoods greener, healthier, and more prepared for climate change. It’s avoluntary and collaborative program that helps people take simple, local actions to improve their environment and reduce risks from climate change. The SNAP framework follows 4 simple steps:
The Chatham-Kent SNAP program is delivered in partnership with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) and is generously funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks (MECP) to implement 3 SNAP neighbourhoods. Neighbourhoods were selected using the following criteria:
SNAP is coming to Wheatley, parts of Wallaceburg, and Thamseville! Examples of SNAP initiatives may include:
Planting native trees
Landscaping with native plants & flowers
Installing rain gardens or rain barrels to manage water
Disconnecting downspouts from the sewer system
Creating educational materials and signage
Naturalizing parks, yards and school yards
Composting
Improving energy use in homes and buildings
Upcoming Public Events
Let's shape the future of Chatham-Kent together! We're currently in the planning stages and are hosting a drop-in style public meeting in each of the selected communities as outlined below:
Tuesday August 12th, 6:00-8:30 pm - Thamesville Brunner Centre (32 Wallace St, Thamesville)
Thursday August 14th, 5:30-8:00 pm - Wallaceburg Municipal Centre (786 Dufferin Ave, Wallaceburg)
Thursday August 21st, 5:30-8:00pm - Village Resource Centre (108 Talbot Road E, Wheatley)
Purpose of the meeting: Learn about the program, identify opportunities in your neighborhood and express interest for SNAP projects on your property.
