Example of DEIJ in Practice: Ontario Introduces French Accent on Health Cards
almost 2 years agoFor those of us whose names can be accurately captured on government identification, we may not have had to think about how government IDs can be limiting. May languages have text or symbols that are not currently reflected on government ID. The government of Ontario is now offering people the ability to change their Health Card to reflect French language characters for free. The Measuring Inclusion Tool for Municipal Governments from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA)
almost 2 years agoThe Measuring Inclusion Tool for Municipal Governments from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) is an interactive toolkit that assists municipal staff measuring level of inclusion.
The tool is based on AUMA Welcoming and Inclusive Communities scale and is an " easy-to-use approach to survey employees and key stakeholders to rate the municipal government’s inclusiveness across a range of topics such as leadership, human resource practices, employee engagement, infrastructure and land use, social services, resident engagement, economic development, and other topics" (Spc, 2022).

Emancipation Day Event - July 30th
almost 2 years agoFor the first time in two years, Ontario Heritage Trust will be hosting an in-person event! The annual celebration of Emancipation Day is to celebrate hope and freedom, and marks the end of slavery in the British Empire.
The event will take place on July 30th from 10:30am-2:30pm at (what is currently called) Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site, where they will be debuting a new site name.
Everyone is welcome to this event, and we hope to see you there!

CKPL Audiobook Club - Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in August and Salt Houses by Hala Alyan in September
by Marlena G, almost 2 years agoThe Chatham-Kent Public Library has a monthly Audiobook Club that you may register for a on month-to-month basis. The club meeting is the last Wednesday night of the month via Zoom from 6-7pm and the audiobooks are available for free through the Libby/Overdrive app (to CKPL library cardholders).
The audiobook for August is "Purple Hibiscus" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It is a fictional novel which "tells the story of a young Nigerian girl, Kambili, and her family. Throughout the novel, the author wrestles with themes of identity, freedom, oppression, love, and tradition as she explores the tensions within Kambili's family... Continue reading

Substance Use and Stigma Learning Modules - Now Available on Our Training Room
almost 2 years agoHello everyone please see the below information from CK Public Health's Harm Reduction Coordinator, Devyn Demars, regarding new learning modules on substance use and stigma. These modules are now live on Our Training Room for staff who interact with community members through their work.
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) has created online learning resources to help Canadians recognize the various forms of stigma and their devastating impact on people who use substances. The learning resources consist of three modules to help change the conversation around stigma and substance use.

Event announcement: Capitol Theatre and SCCDSB present "The Mush Hole" October 12

Just a heads-up about a not-to-be missed event coming to the Capitol Theatre on October 12.
"The Mush Hole" is an award-winning theatre piece that has been touring across Canada. It tells the story of Canada’s first Indian Residential school, the Mohawk Institute, and honours the resilience, courage and strength of residential-school survivors. Created by Six Nations choreographer Santee Smith, the work is performed by the internationally acclaimed Kaha:wi Dance Theatre.
