  • Aug 25th Webinar: Understanding and Honouring National Truth and Reconciliation Day

Indigenous Inclusion Thought Leadership Series: Webinar on August 25, 2022, 1 PM EST

Understanding and Honouring National Truth and Reconciliation Day

Canada's national day of remembrance was originally proposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as Call to Action #80 which "called upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.” Across the country employers and people marked the... Understanding and Honouring National Truth and Reconciliation Day

Canada's national day of remembrance was originally proposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as Call to Action #80 which "called upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.” Across the country employers and people marked the day in different ways which were meaningful, thoughtful, emotional, and poignant.

Our webinar will explore what the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was about, what it learned, and what was originally intended by the 94 calls to action. Six years later Canadians are more knowledgeable about Truth and Reconciliation but many organizations and citizens are still not sure what they should be doing and why it will make a difference. Our webinar will provide an orientation to reconciliation and explain why it's important for you and your organization.

This webinar will cover three topics.

    • Background, history and the meaning of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
    • Why Truth and Reconciliation is important to all Canadians and organizations.
    • What are practices that you should be following for National Truth and Reconciliation Day?

Offered by Indigenous Works. More information and register here: Understanding and Honouring National Truth and Reconciliation Day Webinar (verticalresponse.com)

  • Example of DEIJ in Practice: Ontario Introduces French Accent on Health Cards

For those of us whose names can be accurately captured on government identification, we may not have had to think about how government IDs can be limiting. May languages have text or symbols that are not currently reflected on government ID. The government of Ontario is now offering people the ability to change their Health Card to reflect French language characters for free. Ontario Introduces French Accents on Health Cards | Ontario Newsroom

Are there instances in our organization where you feel that our forms or processes don't enable us to fully capture someone's identity that we could update?
